A Journey That Walks to Its Own Rhythm – Emre Yurt
Interview and Text by Karaca Erden
In today’s interview feature, we meet an artist who courageously embraces the rises and returns of his musical journey and speaks about his creative process with striking sincerity. Blending the foundations of Western rock with the nuanced textures of Anatolian melodies, Emre Yurt draws attention not only through his songs but also through his artistic philosophy and his ability to transform lived experience into sound. After a long hiatus, Yurt has reunited with his audience. We spoke with him about his musical trajectory from past to present, his sources of inspiration, and his reflections on the future.
Karaca Erden: Today, we are joined by Emre Yurt. First of all, welcome. Could you tell us a little about yourself? Who is Emre Yurt, what does he do, and where is he from?
Emre Yurt: Thank you for having me. I graduated from Dokuz Eylül University with a degree in Public Finance. As for the musical chapter of my life, my journey began in middle school when I started taking guitar lessons. During my university years, I continued by performing songs I had written with bands I formed, playing at various concerts and festivals. After achieving high rankings on numerous digital music charts, we signed an album deal with a record label. However, due to disagreements with the company and turbulent periods in my personal life, I stepped away from music for many years. After a long break, I returned alongside my band with Affet, a song and music video written and composed by me. I am originally from İzmir.
Karaca Erden: If you were to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Emre Yurt: Humility, solitude, creativity.
Karaca Erden: How did your musical journey begin? What sparked it?
Emre Yurt: I would describe my style as one rooted in Western rock, layered with the emotional resonance of Anatolian melodies — a distinctive fusion that feels entirely my own.
Karaca Erden: What was your first musical release? Have you written and composed your own works?
Emre Yurt: My first release was Ne İçin in 2010, a song for which I wrote both the lyrics and the music. We will soon be re-releasing an updated version across all platforms.
Karaca Erden: How many projects have you shared with listeners so far?
Emre Yurt: In total, around twelve or thirteen songs. Many of them are available on various platforms, often accompanied by music videos.
Karaca Erden: Every piece has its own story, of course, but is there one that holds particular significance for you?
Emre Yurt: Gitme is especially meaningful to me — both in terms of the story behind its writing and the way that story was brought to life in its music video. Seeing its emotional depth resonate with a wide audience brings me immense fulfillment.
Karaca Erden: Have there been people who supported you throughout your musical career? What does that support mean to you?
Emre Yurt: Absolutely. I have had the privilege of working with many remarkable individuals who have walked this path alongside me, and I continue to do so. Moving forward with a collective spirit makes the journey all the more meaningful.
Karaca Erden: Did you face challenging periods when you first embarked on your musical path? Were there moments when you considered giving up?
Emre Yurt: Certainly. We endured difficult times, fought through obstacles, experienced setbacks, and lost time. But all of these became chapters of the story. We keep moving forward.
Karaca Erden: You mentioned having an interest in music during your childhood. Is there a particular memory from those years that has stayed with you?
Emre Yurt: I’ve tried to recall one, but I cannot pinpoint a single defining memory that left an indelible mark.
Karaca Erden: Was there a turning point in your career that profoundly influenced you?
Emre Yurt: Meeting Onur Bağcı was a pivotal moment. He became the driving force that crowned and ignited our production process.
Karaca Erden: You are also a lyricist. What inspires your writing?
Emre Yurt: Everything I have lived and experienced is a treasure to me. Likewise, everything I listen to becomes a wellspring of ideas that shapes my sound.
Karaca Erden: Do the responses you receive from listeners influence your creative process?
Emre Yurt: Without a doubt. Positive feedback elevates our energy. Constructive and thoughtful criticism is equally valuable — I take it into careful consideration.
Karaca Erden: Where do you see yourself in the future?
Emre Yurt: I prefer to move forward step by step. After such a long pause, we are producing again, and despite the years away from music, we are receiving encouraging responses. For now, we are savoring the present moment.
Karaca Erden: Beyond music, are there other dreams you wish to realize?
Emre Yurt: No. What remains is simply to complete a story in music that once felt unfinished.
Karaca Erden: Is there an artist who inspires you?
Emre Yurt: I draw inspiration from artists of the past. I admire their stance, their approach to creation, and the emotional authenticity that defined their era of production.
Emre Yurt’s reflections reveal that music, for him, is not merely a process of creation but a narrative of resilience and transformation. His return to producing after challenging years underscores the depth of his connection to his art. His sincerity and emphasis on collective spirit suggest that the work he will unveil in the coming years will carry the same depth and authenticity.
